HOW LOOKING SHOWY MADE NIGERIAN YOUTHS TARGETS FOR SARS VIOLENCE

SARS (Special Anti Robbery Squad) is a defunct department in the Nigeria Police Force under the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). The squad was created as a faceless police unit that performs undercover operations against crimes associated with armed robbery, car snatching, kidnapping, and crimes associated with firearms.  SARS in many locations throughout Nigeria is infamous for the victimization of innocent citizens in order to allegedly enrich themselves. The SARS operatives have also been accused of human right abuses, illegal stops and searches, illegal arrests and detentions, extrajudicial killings, sexual harassment of women and brutalizing of many young Nigerians, and there is no doubt as to the truth of these allegations, as over the years this operatives have been witnessed against and caught on tape perpetrating this acts. The proverbial last straw for Nigerians was the continuous killings and brutalization of young people for the singular...

WHAT WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET IN OUR STRUGGLE FOR A BETTER SOCIETY!

It feels good to have our voices heard, we speak, and they hear, we rise as one, and they have no other choice but to acknowledge our collective rights. And as we bask in the satisfaction of our rising power and the inevitable end to what has caused families, friends and neighbors countless terrors, let's not forget that it's never over until there is permanent change. And the purpose why we raised our voices in the first place should never be forgotten. Remember this! There has never been a struggle for a better society without those whose lives were lost battling for a united front. T o the many who have died, and to the countless individuals who in one way or the other have been subjected to unimaginable terrors even as we speak, it is with deepest sorrow that we apologize not just for ourselves but for the evil that we let fester in our society. And we make a promise to those heroic Men and Women ; we promise to keep the struggle going, we promise to use our voices to carry...

Do we control our Brains or Do our Brains control us?

Image
Have you ever held you urine for a long time and on the sight of a means of convenience it seemed liked your bladder would burst that very second? Likewise when you hold your bowel movement for a long period of time... I bet you have.  So, what really happens at that moment? Science explains that at the sight of a means of convenience the brain tends to release it's control on the external urethral sphincter.  The bladder has two sphincters, internal and external which guard it's exit. The internal sphincter is entirely under the influence of the autonomic nervous system while the external sphincter is under the influence of the conscious mind (cerebral cortex), even when the full and the internal sphincter is opened we could still control our urination by our influence on the external sphincter. But there is something rather strange about this phenomenon that makes us suddenly lose control of that sphincter when we see a place of convenience. Could it ...

What Trust should really mean!

Image
American college basketball player, coach and broadcaster, Jim Valvano, wrote, "life changes when you least expect it to. The future is uncertain, so seize this day, seize this moment and make the most of it". With his words and more in mind, I have come to realize that the futures uncertainty though scary, is and will still be what I make of it and what I do with the time I have on my hands. Yes! Things may happen, from subtle and sad life changes to life threatening and ultimately fatal experiences, I can never know for certain or even imagine what life holds for me any moment from now. And as the years go by I have come to think and worry less about it and this is not due to the fact that I myself am not scared or because I simply don't care. It's because of a single word, Trust . I've come to realize that Trust is letting go of not just the things I can't control as people will have you think, but even the things I think I have control over, cause come to...

Tackling Depression Your Way

Image
In our last post we saw a few people share their feelings and stories on depression,  now I think it's right we look at ways of tackling this menace, depression, after all it's not to be taken lightly. There has been countless incidence, especially since the dawn of the 21st century of people committing suicides and self-harming as a result of depression and so depression is an issue that should be taking very seriously, we should spend time talking about it and creating awareness about it as much as we can. (see wikipedia for more on Self-harm  ) Its also important not to forget that sadness and despair are normal feeling's anyone can have, and so should not always be associated with depression. Prolonged feelings of sadness due to stress, loss of a loved one, disappointment or major life changes can bring about such normal feelings.  We are only human after all. As long as you have times when you experience and truly enjoy things, and you can still see hope and light in...

A Diary of the Depressed

Image
Depression: a single word with weight like a ton of metal, weighing down on the heart, weighing down on the soul.  We can explain depression as a clinical disease or something that should be diagnosed, but it is far deep than that.  To think depression has a definite explanation or cure, is to not know depression at all.  You know, it starts out different for each one of us, sometimes we associate it with feelings of love, hate, anger, sadness, and emotions we can't even name.  Other times it's simply unexplained, the answer to the question of  'what is wrong' or 'why the sad look', is often met with a blank reply, a shrug here or the commonest reply: 'i'm fine'.  How do we even begin to answer what we don't know ourselves. At that moment, when all we can see is dark, when all we know is that terrible feeling of hopelessness, yes! that's it, hopelessness. A feeling of loss at live's many joys. There's an absence of Joy and love in ou...

The true African Reality!

Image
Africa has been portrayed as a continent of the poor, countries with hungry children, visible ribs and bloated stomachs, war torn countries. Our countries have been written off as some of the most corrupted in the world. Though there's always truth in it all, that's about everything we are to international media and bulk of the international entertainment media who sees us as  the major destination for any portrayal of hut-and-bush inhabiting black people. Unrefined and impoverished is what Africa is constantly portrayed as in foreign movies and music videos. Funny! we find ourselves warming up to these notions, in fact we get comfortable at the thought of us been poor and primitive Africa, easily accepting to be at the receiving end of medical aids, relief funds, and donations. Although nothing is inherently wrong with all these, the problem is constantly finding ourselves as the victims, and been comfortable,if not happily remaining in that status. It's so bad that it se...
