Red Rising Book Series; A Review
While searching the internet for a good science fiction book to occupy my time with, I came across a book series by Brown Pierce called RED RISING and Delving into its pages, I couldn't help but get hooked with its cleverly written plot, awesome characters and very impressive world-building.
So cause of the awesome nature of the series I decided to write a short review on it, and although I know most science fiction fans might have come across this great book series, I'll also bear in mind that most have not and because of this I'll try not to drop any spoilers.
Red Rising, the first book in the series follows humanity 700 years into the future, with earth already conquered and no longer the center of humanities power. Humans have now colonized most of the planets, moons and bodies in the solar system, humanity has been restructured into a rigid hierarchical system based on colors, each with their unique specialties, the Gold's are at the top of the society and are the ruling color, the Red's are the lowest colors and are the societies laborers.
The series first book begins with Darrow a Red from one of Mar's mining colonies, these mining colonies are where Red's are forced to work under harsh conditions to supply the other planets and moons with Helium-3 for Terra-forming. Darrow, his family, and the rest of the reds unaware of the already developed society above them, labor away with nothing but hope and love keeping them together. Suddenly his life comes crashing around him when he loses the love of his life to the society.
Assumed dead and joining a Resistance group, Darrow finds out that his world is a lot bigger than what he thinks and its cruelty far exceeding what he imagined, he begins his quest for vengeance and Liberation, making a sacrifice that leads him on a journey across the solar system to free his people from tyrannical oppression, and the only way he can do that is by destroying those who hold the key to their chains...the Golds.
The rest of the series follows after the first book, with Darrow making friends, Allies, and enemies along the way and learning the true meaning of friendship, love and sacrifice while freeing his world from a corrupt system.
Red Rising is one book series that I guarantee will leave you hooked with every turn of the page, from it's soaring futuristic cities, awesome landscapes, wonderful characters, and majestic spaceships to the authors ability to make every suspenseful moment and surprising plot twists pop. The series also gives you the feel of a combination of elements from books and movies such as the Hunger Games, The Matrix, and some notable fantasy works.
Brown Pierce, author of the series, also gives the book a more in-depth meaning by giving the series a political/Real-world angle yet fantastical feel that conveys many of the challenges we face today as humans.
Although not without its faults, which I must add are far between, the series sometimes has lengthy heroic speeches and at times, slow plotting.
Now, if you're asking yourself whether the Red Rising series is going to be worth the read, then the answer is a very big yes. So if your ready to dive in, get ready for a world of space battles and high tech.
The series spans five books with the final book still upcoming.
Books in the series include;
Red Rising
Golden son
Morning Star
Iron Gold
Dark Age
